Don't Blow a Hernia

At this busy time of year taking a deep breath can do wonders.

If you’re heading away or doing more physical activity than usual over the Summer break, it’s also important to remember to breathe but for quite a different reason.

Hernias are common complaints that become more frequent as we get older.

A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place.

For example, the intestines may break through a weakened area in the abdominal wall.

Hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and strain.

There are several things that will contribute to Hernias but one of the most common contributors is heavy activities.

Breath holding during activities that require power (e.g. pushing, pulling, lifting), will increase the pressure in your abdomen and increase the strain on your body.

This repetitive strain can lead to a hernia (and other serious issues such as blood vessel strain and high blood pressure).

The other bonus of breathing out is that you’ll be stronger and reduce any strain on your muscles and spine.

So, for heavy work, remember to increase your power and keep yourself injury free - BREATHE OUT.
